… Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes

Comfy warm mukluks that shimmer and bling

These are a few of my favorite things!

Winter is finally upon us! Usually, Winnipegers are buried knee deep in snow by mid to late November – but not so this year. It’s been positively balmy here in Canada… until NOW. There’s a chill in the air and the forecast calls for 5-10 cm of snow.

You know what that means? It’s time to get into a pair of Sweet Pedtooties mukluks or slippers to keep your toes toasty warm AND fashionable! Now that the holidays are approaching, they make the perfect gifts for those special people on your list… and make a perfect gift for you (so start dropping hints!).

I had such a nice surprise this morning – I went to our facebook group page and found out that Celebrity stylist, fashion stylist, and style expert Sarah Shirley lists Sweet Pedtooties modern mukluks as her number one favorite product in her “Top 5 Favorite Things” on her website! We are so excited about this – Thanks, Sarah! check it out at sarahshirley.com

In other news, Sweet Pedtooties is pleased to be a part of the silent auction at the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba’s 4th annual Ice Crystal Gala on December 6, 2010. This fun filled event raises funds each year for the Children’s Hospital here in Winnipeg and we’re so happy to be involved. If you are interested in attending and in bidding on a free pair of mukluks for a worthy cause, you can purchase gala tickets at The Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba website.

Last but not least, for all you Winnipegers out there, we are also excited to announce that our mukluks are now available in stores. Local boutique, Poppie Clothing is carrying our adult mukluks while Toto ‘n Dot exclusively carries our children’s line of mukluks. And, as always, you can purchase our mukluks and slippers on our website.

So it’s been a while since I’ve last written – and I’ve no excuse other than the fact that my life has been utterly INSANE as of late!

We launched our new Sweet Dreams Slippers line – check them out on the site (www.sweetpedtooties.com). They are SO comfy and have the same modern and hip flare that our mukluks have.  They’re perfect all year round – for the cottage and inside an air conditioned house in the summer and anywhere to keep your feet toasty in the winter.  We even have a Mother’s Day promotion right now – get 10% off any pair of slippers or mukluks for mom! The offer expires on May 9th so hurry hurry and get yourself a pair!

Over the past month, we’ve given some free mukluks and slippers away to different charities and organizations for various fundraising events – the latest event was a gala for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The night was a huge success and a free pair of our mukluks sold for $500 at the silent auction! I’m so glad that we could be part of raising that money for such an important cause.

Meanwhile, our phone’s not exactly ringing off the hook yet and when the business line rings, it’s usually a wrong number… but I DID get a fabulous call from a lovely lady in California the other day. She called to tell me that she has followed my blog and wanted to congratulate me on the mukluks! She said she hadn’t realized that we were making adult mukluks as well, – she thought they were absolutely gorgeous and asked where in Los Angeles she could purchase a pair! Sweet Pedtooties products are only available online (at lease for now) – she sounded excited so I hope she purchases a pair. I was so surprised that I forgot to ask her where and how she first heard of us! So, to the lovely and supportive Minionette (please forgive me if I’ve butchered  your name) – I’d love it if you would email me and let me know how you first heard of Sweet Pedtooties – info@sweetpedtooties.com. It would be great to keep in touch!

Now let’s talk about my personal craziness: Taps was away in Brandon, Manitoba for two weeks for a residency rotation. He was originally happy to get the heck out of Tapper-ville so he could get some solid studying done. Oy – the studying! We’re in the home stretch now… only 6 weeks left until he takes his final Pediatric board exam in Ottawa… and then he’s done!!! All he needs to do is pass – don’t you love how I say “ALL he has to do”? As if trying to remember every aspect of the discipline of pediatrics isn’t enough to make his brain explode – kablooey! So, as I was saying, all he needs to do is pass and he’ll be a licensed Pediatrician! Hooray! All the late nights, overnights and weekends at the hospital will be done!! The kids can stop asking “Where’s Daddy?” or “Daddy? What are you doing here?” We can have some family time on weekends… or, better yet, he can take the kids for a bit and I can go have some ME TIME! Me time…. Ahhhhhhh. Well… to be fair, I guess he can have some time to himself too. :)

My two year old turned 3 a week and a half ago! How does time fly so fast? When I gave birth to my girls, my mother and every other middle aged woman in town told me the same thing: “It goes fast! Cherish every moment”. And, you know what? They were right, absolutely spot on right! As the years go by, I now see how you wake up one day in an 80 year olds body with your children’s children all grown. Makes you realize the importance of taking the time to stop, appreciate and inhale life in! Sniffffffff. Ahhhhhhhh!

So, apparently, mukuks aren’t just warm, cozy and uber fashionable… they’re great footwear for running too!!! Check out this article in today’s Winnipeg Free Press.

That’s right! Go ahead and ditch your Nikes and Adidas and get yourself a pair of Sweet Pedtooties mukluks. Your feet will thank you for them since, according to the Barefoot Running movement, they’ll experience less injury. According to the article, “a Harvard study… found that those who ran barefoot or with minimal footwear tended to avoid injuries associated with the heavy and dangerous heel=strike of shoe wearers”. Since mukluks are soft-soled, the foot is able to move inside the mukluk similar to how it would barefoot. I always knew that’s partly why they are so comfortable, but now I know that, according to some experts, it’s how I can keep my feet healthy too.
Sounds good to me!

Just a quick update to let you know that I just got a thank you phone call from Deidre Hall… THE Deidre Hall!

The phone rang, I picked it up to hear the last thing I ever expected to hear on the other end… “Hello. It’s Deidre”. As I tried to pick my jaw off the floor, I managed to squeal out a much too shrill, “Hiiiiiii!”
This woman is true class. When we met her at the Oh Canada Gift Lounge in L.A., she was happy, friendly and totally sweet. When we sent out free mukluks, we never expected to hear back from most of the celebrities. We thought that MAYBE one or two might send us a “thank you” email. But a phone call??? Never in a million years did we think that would happen. So, thank you Deidre, for being a true class act and for making my year!
Now I’ve got to peel myself off the ceiling and go pick up my kids from daycare. Too bad they won’t understand what big phone call mommy just got!
So we’ve been back from Los Angeles for a few weeks now and know that it’s now time to do something with the experience we had. Yes… the big M. It’s time for some marketing so that people can actually know we exist!

We had a great time at the “Oh Canada Premium Gift Lounge” at the Golden Globes. We met some incredible people… and not just the celebrities, but our fellow vendors as well. What was really interesting and amazing to see was just how many of the participating businesses were owned by women. I’d say almost 3/4 of the businesses that participated were owned/run by women. Go girl power!!

We had arrived into Los Angeles late on our first day due to a 2.5 hour delay in Edmonton. So, I was already anxious upon our arrival! We still had to purchase everything we needed for our gift lounge display in L.A. (so we’d avoid shipping costs from Canada) and one of those items needed was a full length mirror anyway (we certainly didn’t want to start dealing with shipping a mirror all the way to L.A.)! So, part of the “let’s arrive early” plan was to go shopping for our display. And where did we go? Why Targét, of course!

If I do say so myself, we did an amazing job (shopping IS one of my strengths!). We needed a full length, stand alone mirror – check; we needed something with height for a few of the mukluks to sit on – check (got a couple of glass cake stands); and we needed 3 display shelving stands to show off our wares – bust. Couldn’t find a thing! Fortunately, a lightbulb went on in the lamp aisle. There, on the display shelves, amongst many “not so much my taste” lamps was a floor lamp that would soon become our display shelving. It was a brushed nickel stand with three frosted glass shelves and a lamp shade wrapped above the top shelf. Why not cut the wire, pull out the light and remove the lamp shade? Well, that’s exactly what we did. It worked out amazingly! We bought three of them and, not only did they look fantastic, but they took only 5 minutes to put together… without tools! That was great news for us, considering we had just 3 hours in the gift lounge to set up our display.

We arrived first thing in the morning on the opening day and were able to get a stellar spot in the lounge. Between our signage, some decorative ribbon, our new mirror and, of course, our three new shelving displays, our table looked pretty darn good. Here’s a photo of Mara and I in front of our display at the Oh Canada Premium Gift Lounge (note one of the display shelves to the left of Mara… I know… I’m sickeningly, overly proud of the shelves. I have a problem.):

 Sweet Celebrities
The doors opened that first day (Friday, January 17, 2010) at 10:00 AM and then began our fun-filled, exciting, surreal and totally exhausting day (it’s hard being “on” for 8 hours straight). Thank God we were at least selling a comfy footwear product, otherwise my feet would have been killing me by the end. Instead, my feet were totally fine… my brain hurt, but the feet were perfect!

We had brought with us 17 assorted pairs of mukluks. The plan was not to gift them then and there but to take orders and ship them to the celebrities for free. The thought was that, this way, each person would get the exact pair they wanted (rather than getting whatever was left in their size) and, hopefully, actually wear them as a result. We only offered free mukluks to a select few (we gave away 17 pairs in total) but gave $100 off gift cards to everyone else who came by our table.

Okay, time for some photos! We just got our picture CD from Wire Image (you can see most of the photos online at wireimage.com) so here are some of the highlights of the trip:

Meeting Neve Campbell! Oh, how I used to love watching the Salinger family in “Party of Five”… and the “Scream” movies… all part of my mid-90’s, university years memories. Neve was so nice – low key, down to earth and absolutely beautiful. She just received her pair of “Tall Gummi Grey Fur Candy” Sweet Pedtooties mukluks the other day!

 Sweet Celebrities
Meeting Catherine O’Hara. I adore this woman! Not only is she a brilliant comedic actress (SCTV, Waiting For Guffman, Best In Show, A Mighty Wind) but she was so fun, energetic and genuine. I’m a big fan of hers (and I married into a family of die-hard SCTV-aholics) so I was so excited and honoured to meet her! She designed her very own unique Sweet Pedtooties mukluks – Tall Candy Apple (green) Candy mukluks with brown fur. We just sent them off to her last week and they looked gorgeous!

 Sweet Celebrities
Meeting Ashley Greene (Alice Cullen in the Twilight films). Now, I recognize that the Twilight novels are written for “young adults” and the films are made mostly for teens… but I love them all! I remember reading the series one after the other – boom boom boom. I couldn’t put them down (my husband half joked that the kids would be climbing the walls around me, with knives and scissors in hand… and I’d have my nose buried in a Twilight book saying, “yeah… that’s great girls.”). I’ve loved the movie series so far, as well… so meeting Ashley was a thrill. She was so sweet! I honestly can’t think of a better word to describe her. And gorgeous! I’m not posting the picture of Mara and I with Ashley since we look fat and hideous in comparison! She loved a pair of Tall Gummi Grey Candy mukluks (seen in picture below) so much that she asked if she could take them with her right then. They fit her perfectly and she said, “Can I take these? I’m going to Germany on Monday for a film shoot for a month and I’d love to take them with me.” Ummmmm…. let me just let that marinade for a second… ugh…YEAH! Take them! Take them! Take them!! (we, of course tried to sound less desperate than that). So, she and her assistant each took a pair with them and we couldn’t be happier. I’ve been scouring the web looking for photos of Ashley in Germany and haven’t been able to find any so far. So, if you see any photos of Ashley Greene in her Sweet Pedtooties mukluks, please let us know.
 Sweet Celebrities
Meeting Deidre Hall (Dr. Marlena Evans of Days of Our Lives)! Okay – this was my soap opera, people! Back in the days when I was addicted and watched it every single day… when Stella threw Marlena in the pit, when Marlena was the Devil… and I got to meet Deidre!! She was so lovely. Happy and warm. It was a true pleasure to meet her. She chose a pair of Tall Black Licorice Fur Candy mukluks, which were delivered to her yesterday. We hope she loves them!

 Sweet Celebrities
Well, I think I’ve written more than enough for one day (probably enough for a month) – so I’ll stop here and continue later.

In the meantime, please join our facebook page and follow us on Twitter (which we’re still trying to figure out)!!

Hello from L.A.!!! I’m just sitting here at the Oh Canada gift lounge at the Peninsula hotel… it’s winding down now (last 15 minutes) and I’m pooped but pumped!

Our mukluks were recieved really well and we met some great people today. Neve Campbell stopped by (I’m trying to say that casually but… NEVE CAMPBELL tried on our mukluks!!!). We met Diedre Hall (yes… that’s Marlena from Days Of Our Lives) AND… here’s the kicker… we just gave a pair away to Ashley Greene who plays Alice Cullen in the movie Twilight!! I love her – and she was so sweet.

More later – gotta run but wanted to give a quick update.

THE E-COMMERCE SITE IS ALMOST UP! PLEASE BE PATIENT – SORRY FOR THE WAIT. JUST A FEW MORE HOURS OR… MAYBE A DAY OR TWO… BUT IT’S A COM’IN!!

So… 28 hours left until we lift off and are on our way to the Globes. AHHHH! Crazy! So much to do… but so excited!

It’s 1:30 AM but I can’t sleep because my mind is swimming with all the things that I need to accomplish tomorrow. Since my mind has become a sieve (not sure if lack of sleep or having children are to blame) I like to make lists. Lists are my friend… they keep me sane. If I forget? Refer to the list. Last night I made the mistake of making several lists (what to purchase in L.A. for our table at the Oh Canada gift lounge, what to purchase before we leave Winnipeg, what last minute details need to get completed before we leave) in a little tiny notepad… that has since gone missing! I have looked everywhere… but no luck! No notepad. No lists. So now my mind is working overtime trying to recall everything I had written down. Must bring blackberry to bed in case I have any epiphanies while trying to fall asleep (I’m moving to digital lists – hopefully I won’t lose my blackberry).

Other news: Website almost completed. There were some close calls where we thought it wasn’t going to get done (truthfully, I won’t breath a sigh of relief until it’s actually up and running) but it’s coming along now and looking great! We’re hoping to be able to take online orders by the end of the week. Yahoo!

Okay – must try to go to bed but I plan to write from L.A. with updates on all the fabulous celebs we’ll be meeting! Boy I hope so. No matter what happens, though, we’re going to have a kick ass time!

A Sweet New Year

Before 2009 officially comes to a close, I thought I’d give everyone a quick update.

I’m still plugging away on the website. The launch date is set for January 12, 2010, at which point, people will be able to purchase their Sweet Pedtooties modern mukluks off of the website! In the meantime, however, if you’re interested in buying a pair, please contact us at sales@sweetpedtooties.com.

Some media news: Mara and I will be on the Winnipeg CBC radio morning show (89.3 FM/990 AM) on Monday, January 4th… and when I say morning, I mean EARLY morning. We’re taping at 7:00 AM, which means that, because of my inability to move quickly in the morning (hence the nickname: “Dawdle Princess”), I’ll have to get up at some unGodly hour… like 5:30 AM or something stupid like that. Man, I’ve got to learn how to move faster in the morning! Do they offer classes for that? Now THAT would be a useful course to take in University: How to Shave 30 Minutes Off Your Morning Routine, Live a More Productive Life and Other Useful Tidbits. I mean, who wouldn’t sign up for that one?!?

The upside is that: A) We’re going to be on the radio and receive some exposure and B) the interview doesn’t air until 7:45 AM so we have enough time to get home and listen to ourselves. Although, to be honest, I cringe at the thought. Why is it that most people can’t stand the sound of their own recorded voice or, at the very least, don’t recognize it as being their own? At any rate, Mara and I and our strange, unrecognizable voices will be on the radio Monday morning. So, turn on your radios and check it out!

Otherwise, we’re still working against the clock to get everything ready for our trip to LA for the gift lounge. 13 days and counting. Oh God! We better get it all done!

—————————–

Mara and I just want to say a big Thank You to all those friends, family and even strangers who have been so supportive and encouraging to us in 2009. We, at Sweet Pedtooties, wish everyone a happy, healthy, successful and fun-filled 2010.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

xoxo
Mara and Susie

We’re still insanely busy trying to get ready for the Globes (that still sounds crazy! “The Globes”!) and got very excited when I heard the nominee announcements this past Tuesday. There’s some pretty great names invited to this shindig! Celebrities like Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, Tina Fey, Drew Barrymore… now what are the chances that they’ll all come to the lounge? I don’t know… not getting my hopes up… but wouldn’t it be nice??? Then they’d ALL come to the lounge, fall madly in love with our mukluks and tell all their friends!!!!

Ah… California dreaming. Anyway, in the meantime I thought I’d post some more pictures of the mukluks for all to see.

I wanted to just quickly mention that:

SWEET PEDTOOTIES MODERN MUKLUKS ARE FOR ADULTS TOO!!!!!

Does it read like I’m yelling that? Yeah… I realized that I may have done us a slight disservice in putting the adorable pics of our kids on the blog this week – unfortunately, some people are thinking that we’re only a mukluk line for kids. Not true. We make mukluks for infants, youth and ADULT WOMEN.

See? Here’s a picture of Mara and I wearing our Sweet Pedtooties modern mukluks:

Look how happy we are! I mean, really – don’t all women deserve to be this happy?

Seriously, though, we’ve got something for everyone… except for men, I guess… although, since we do custom work, if there’s a man who wants a pair, we can accommodate!

People have been inquiring about how they might go about getting a pair of mukluks while waiting for our e-commerce site to be up. If you’re interested in purchasing a pair, please email us at sales@sweetpedtooties.com or at info@sweetpedtooties.com if you have any questions.

Anyway, I just needed to put it out there into the blogosphere that we’re not only about kids – we’ve got the ladies covered too.

Ahhhhhhh. Said my peace. Feel better now.
